Lutz Presser Mouseketears

New Paintings by Lutz Presser

Mouseketears is an ongoing series of paintings begun in 2010. The starting point is a photograph taken of me when I was 4, when my mother dressed me as Mickey Mouse for Fastnacht (German carnival).

I never liked the photograph as I believed it displayed a great deal of vulnerability. Mouseketears continues my interest in imaging displacement, cultural misreading and visual misrepresentation.

The series was motivated in part by the character of Mickey Mouse, being originally depicted as an African American whose representation shifted to that of a middle class White American.
